This month I read A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara.
I thought about linking to one of the many reviews coming out by the day (NPR, LA Times, etc.)… but I’d rather not warn you or inform your reading of it if you decide to pick it up for yourself. All I’ll say is it’s brutal and dazzling.
I also watched Rich Hill. A gorgeous and heartbreaking documentary that follows the “hopes and dreams of the young residents of a rural American town.” It was beautifully edited, and tender with its subjects.
I discovered novelist Tayari Jones’ blog and read this post about cultivating a “writing-only” space and thought yes yes yes. Because I would love a writing space, even if it’s not its own room, like Tayari’s, and is instead just the corner of the kitchen by the window. My big indulgence: I had a simple french door installed so that pets and TV sounds from the living don’t bother my night time writing. No more cat attacks!
I played in the NY Fest soccer tournament with my fellow Stony Brook 20/20/20 classmates.
Then I recorded sound for my friend’s short film the following weekend. Lots of media this month!
I saw Ex Machina, which was so fun and eerie.
